Szymon Michalik

Bassoon / Poland

Born in Nowy Sącz. He began learning to play the bassoon at the age of 11
in the 1st and 2nd Fryderyk Chopin degree Music School in Nowy Sącz in the class of mgr Jan Słowik. In 2010-2013, he studied at the 2nd degree Fryderyk Chopin State Music School in Kraków under the guidance of mgr Zdzisław Bogacz. He is currently a student of the second year of Master’s studies in the class of ad. dr hab. Artur Kasperek at the Fryderyk Chopin University of Music
in Warsaw. He simultaneously studies with prof. Ole Kristian Dahl at the Staatliche Hochschule für Musik und Darstellende Kunst Mannheim.

He is currently the principal bassoonist of Sinfonia Varsovia and Poznań Philharmonic orchestras. In 2016-2017, he worked in the position of a soloist musician – bassoonist at the National Forum of Music in Wrocław. He has also cooperated with the following orchestras: Sinfonietta Cracovia, NFM Orkiestra Leopoldinum, Sinfonia Iuventus, I’Culture Orchestra, Opera Academy of the Grand Theatre – National Opera baroque orchestra and Warsaw Chamber Orchestra.

He has received numerous scholarships: Young Poland (2017), Sapere Auso Foundation (2015/2016, 2016/2017), John Paul the Second City of Warsaw scholarship (2015/2016), Minister of Culture and National Heritage scholarship for outstanding achievements in academic year 2014/2015 and 2011/2012,
Pro Musica Bona (2013/2014, 2012/2013).

His latest achievements include: 2nd place during the exam to Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra Academy (2017), 1st place at the 11th International Competition for Wind Instruments (Brno, 2017), 1st place and 3 special prizes
at the 7th Carol Maria von Weber International Bassoon Competition (Wrocław, 2016), 1st place and special prize at the 1st National Competition for Wind Instruments FINALIS (Białystok, 2016).
