Sam Okawa

Double Bass / Iran/Japan

He comes from Iranian-Japanese family. At the age of 9 he started playing the violin, however one year later he decided to study in the double bass class in the higher school at the National Tokyo University of the Arts. His achievements include for instance the 2nd prize during the Akiyoshidai Music Competition and the 1st prize in the duo during the Gifu International String Competition. He studied under the supervision
of prof. Yasuyuka Nagashima, prof. Hiroshi Ikematsu and prof. Shuntaro Yoshida and he occasionally studied in Canada where was taught by Gary Karr, who appreciated the student’s talent, giving him his bow tie.  Last year Sam performed during the Hida Takayama Music Festival, as well as on stages of: the YBP Music Festival, the Young Victoria Hall in Canada, the Suntory Hall or
the Ginza Oji Hall.
