Damian Walentek Ph.D.

Horn / Karol Szymanowski Academy of Music in Katowice

Born in 1965. He studied at the Academy of Music in Katowice, in the French horn class tutored by  Mieczysław Korcz and in the chamber music class of prof. Henryk Kierski and prof. Tomasz Miczka. He has also completed postgraduate studies in the copyright, publishing rights and the press law at the Department of Management and Social Communication of the Jagiellonian University  in Cracow.

He has improved his skills at masterclasses in Weimar with Peter Damm. He has also taken part in workshops tutored by: Bruce Heim, Christian Dallmann, Stefan de Leval Jezierski, Xiao Ming-Han, Kazimierz Machala, Jennifer Montone and Radovan Vlatković. After a short period of work for the Silesian Opera  in Bytom, since 1989 he has been a French horn player of the National Polish Radio Symphony Orchestra in Katowice. With this orchestra, he has been on over a hundred tours of Europe, South America and Asia, performing at a lot  of concert halls and taking part in important music festivals. As an orchestra musician he has taken part in over a hundred recordings of CDs and DVDs  for Polish and foreign labels (e.g. Camerata Tokyo, Naxos, Newport Classic, Philips), and in archive recordings for the Polish Radio.

He has co-operated with several orchestras and chamber ensembles  (among others the Philharmonic in Gorzów, Łódź Philharmonic, Nowy Sącz Philharmonic, Rybnik Philharmonic, Wrocław Philharmonic, Zabrze Philharmonic, Wrocław Opera, Sinfonia Varsovia in Warsaw, Sinfonietta Cracovia in Cracow, Wratislavia, Leopoldinum and Ricordanza in Wrocław, Silesian Chamber Orchestra and Primo Allegro in Katowice, Aukso in Tychy, Camerata Impuls in Bytom, Silesian Quartet). He has performed under the baton of such conductors as: Christian Arming, Gabriel Chmura, Jacek  Kaspszyk, Kazimierz Kord, Jan Krenz, Alexander Liebreich, Witold Lutosławski, Sir Neville Marriner, Kurt Masur, Krzysztof Penderecki, Jerzy Semkow,  Stanisław Skrowaczewski and Antoni Wit.In 1996 he started teaching at the Academy of Music in Katowice. In 2006 he obtained the doctoral degree, and 2014 the postdoctoral degree of musical arts. Since 2007 he has been working at the post of Assistant Professor. His students of the French horn class have been laureates of numerous national Polish and international competitions.
